"I don't dislike you. It's an oversimplification.” ― Ilona Andrews, Magic Bites

Last week I asked how you were feeling about the changes to The Writing Rundown, and I got a lot of responses.

Some in replies, a ton more in Unsubscribes.

The largest number of “No thank you, stay out of my inbox, please and thank you” actions we’ve ever gotten on a send.

Was it the weird German word in the Subject Line?

Was it the aggressive ask for a reply at the end?

Was it the sorta long essay thing (or the fact that it was repurposed from LinkedIn) after I said I wouldn’t be sharing essays anymore?

Was it the erratic sending schedule of the past few weekends?

A couple TWRs ago I told you that I’m sorta “going through it” right now, trying to figure out a lot of things. About CYC, about my own creative direction, about the places I live and who I spend my time with…so it makes sense that as I’m flailing in the wind, people would be less interested in sticking around for that flailing.

That’s all to say, I totally understand if you want to jump ship as well!

If you are willing to stay through it, I promise I’ll be sharing more at some point what this all is about and what it feels like and the process I’ve gone through.

Or if the weird foreign word in the subject line put you off…well…this probably isn’t going to be the space for you, anyway.

CYC Elsewhere…

Other places we’ve popped up around the interwebs.

  • Spring Cleaning Workshop — In 3 days, re-align your writing life and get ready to dive into the next season of your creative flow (mark your calendars, Tuesday, April 9th thru Thursday, April 11th)

In Other Reading This Week …

Need more insights and inspiration for your writing and mindset?

  • I’ve never been a fan of time-blocking (my workflow can’t succeed on a pre-plotted schedule, no matter how hard I try) but I recognize the benefit. Have you heard of time-shielding? I like this concept, and breakdown, by Anne-Laure Le Cunff on Ness Labs.
  • Threads made big waves announcing their integration to the Fediverse this week! It’s a big deal!! If you are interested in getting back a small hold on your own content and connections, you need to know about it. And this piece from David Pierce on The Verge is hilarious, informative, and suggests some ways to get started.
  • Have you heard about this method for writing a story? I gotta say, I’m rather sad to say I hadn’t heard about it before, because I love a good pomegranate nosh! Thanks Kris Maze for bringing it to our attention over on Writers in the Storm.
  • It’s tough to give out planning advice, because we all have different brains and preferences and styles. Anne Janzer does a great job breaking down some of the ways different planners can still thrive.
  • I know that you’ve all been waiting with anxious excitement for this ruling to come down…Merriam-Webster (yes, the dictionary people) have officially signed off on it…we can end our sentences in a preposition now! Try to calm down. 😏

Weekly Writing Tip …

A quick chance to learn from the masters.

“There are two reasons you dislike a writer.

You’re read the person and couldn’t relate.

You’ve not read the person and just hate him for being popular.”

― Himmilicious

Untranslatable …

Exquisite words from other languages.

Schadenfreude [SHAH-den-froy-duh] (n.) – From the German language, this has become a loanword in many languages, but not many people know what it means. It literally translates as “damage joy” and it is a sense of joy that one feels at seeing someone else’s misfortune. Sorta synonyms: yearning, melancholy, ennui, depression

This Week’s Writing Resource …

Why not use the tools at your disposal?

Shepherd — I love the different types of lists that are curated on this site, from authors for authors to share what they are reading!

For the Upcoming Week …

Because we all need a good chuckle to start things off right!

Yay? It’s a strength?

‘Til next time! ~ Elisa
