Write fast? Write slow?

Published about 1 month ago • 3 min read

Welcome to The Writing Rundown, a weekly newsletter that offers advice, short essays, and reading suggestions to help driven writers (like you!) improve their writing craft. It's nice to see you here! If someone forwarded you this email because they love your writing, you can subscribe here.

Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes

“Spring is the time of plans and projects.” ― Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

Sometimes spring means new growth, and sometimes bring means regrowth.

I’m going to be exploring what happens with my writing, CYC, and life in general over the next few months … and after a lot of requests and conversations, I’ll be sharing more of it.

Not here! This weekly missive will continue to focus on writing, creativity, and writerpreneuship.

I’ll be sharing more of what I’m working on in the workshop later this month, that feels like a nice small safe space.

After that, who knows? Return of The Webb? If you know, you are in the OG know. 😏

What You Missed on Craft Your Content …

Our articles have the same mission we do — to help you to make your own words even better!

  • Want to get back into your own writing groove? Figure out what the heck you want to do with your creative direction? Plan your next 90 days? Join me on Tuesday, April 9th for our 3-day workshop, Revitalize Your Writing Life to…well…revitalize your writing life!

In Other Reading This Week …

Need more insights and inspiration for your writing and mindset?

  • Entertainment is dead. And that is fantastic news for you as a writer! Ted Gioia’s “The State of Culture, 2024” has some insight you wouldn’t expect, especially about the state of AI vs analog in our creative futures.
  • There’s this weird shift that’s happened in writing, where speed is a magic achievement. Write a book in a weekend, publish a researched article in 70 minutes…but as Sian Clifford explores, what if we go faster when embrace slowing it down?
  • Maybe it is the research I’ve been doing for the article, maybe it is the time of year, maybe it is the different workflows and processes I’ve been trying, but this piece from Charlie Gilkey on the idea of heat mapping your day was a new one to me
  • That being said, not everything has to be a carefully planned out schedule and map to follow. This piece from Rose Atkinson-Carter makes a great case for adding some procrastination into your writing process.
  • Every little bit helps. You don’t need to run a marathon to get that creative adrenaline rush. According to this piece from Sam Pyrah in The Guardian, there are simpler steps to take.

Weekly Writing Tip …

A quick chance to learn from the masters.

"The Everywhereist has ebbed and flowed since I started it in 2009, a reflection of my own difficulties writing consistently, my doubts about my career, my inability to focus, something akin to writer’s block but less romantic that I attribute to laziness. Some years I’ve written 250 posts. Some years I’ve written roughly ten. I have wondered if I should abandon it altogether. Sometimes I do, for months at a time. But I always come back." — Geraldine DeRuiter, If You Can't Take the Heat: Tales of Food, Feminism, and Fury

Untranslatable …

Exquisite words from other languages.

Gigil [ghEE-gull] (n.) – From the Filipino language, gigil is the unavoidable urge one gets to pinch or squeeze or smoodge something ridiculously cute. Sorta synonyms: cute aggression, can’t help yourself, “squisha ‘da face”

This Week’s Writing Resource …

Why not use the tools at your disposal?

Focusmate I will probably share this tool at least 4-5 times this year. Every. Writer. Should. Be. On. It. It is an interface that matches you with other folks around the world who need to sit their butts in chairs for a sprint, so you can co-work and get stuff done. (This is my affiliate link BUT it gets you a free month of Focusmate Plus, so that’s why I share it!)

For the Upcoming Week …

Because we all need a good chuckle to start things off right!

Sometimes you gotta take the chance anyway.

‘Til next time! ~ Elisa
